Health & Wellness.

✅People with disabilities shouldn’t have to wait until it is emergent to access care — proactive health services must be designed to include them from the start, not as an afterthought.

✅This means ensuring clinic spaces are physically accessible and that healthcare providers are equipped with the knowledge and sensitivity to support individuals with all types of disabilities.

✅That’s why the Hub will include on-site commercial services such as doctors’ offices, therapy clinics, and other essential providers — with a focus on a holistic wrap-around approach

Equitable Living.

✅The Elmwood Community Hub will have up to 140 fully accessible, independent living residential units for tenants representing the rich diversity of our community.

✅The apartment complex will offer a mix of market-rate and affordable housing options, with priority given to affordable units for people with disabilities.

✅There will be a mix of barrier-free one, two, and three-bedroom units, supporting continued independence, safety, and comfort for people of all of abilities.

Rooted in Legacy, Designed for What's Next.

Since 1969, Elmwood has been a cornerstone of the Saskatoon community, providing residential supports and services to individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Our founders — Al Anderson, Howard Stensrud, and other passionate advocates — created Elmwood as a catalyst for change. They envisioned a place where inclusion and empowerment weren’t just ideals, but everyday realities.

The Elmwood Community Hub is the next chapter in that legacy — a bold, future-focused space grounded in over 50 years of experience. The Hub will be more than a building; it’s a promise to create a community where people of all abilities can truly belong.

 A New Chapter of Inclusion.

Too often, individuals with disabilities are expected to adapt to spaces that weren’t built for them.

The Hub will be intentionally designed to reverse that — prioritizing accessibility, inclusion, and dignity at every level.

Built for Belonging.

The Elmwood Community Hub will be where inclusion is more than a value — it’s the foundation. Every detail of the space will be designed to create meaningful opportunities for people with disabilities to connect, participate, and thrive. From social programs to shared spaces, the Hub will foster a deep sense of belonging for all.

Truly Accessible by Design.

Accessibility isn't an add-on — it's embedded in every aspect of the Hub. Whether it's the layout of residential units, barrier-free entrances, sensory-friendly spaces, or proximity to care, the Hub will be a model of inclusive, universal design, with the intention to become Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certified.

A Hub for Community Connection.

The Elmwood Community Hub will bring interconnected programming and community spaces, equitable health and wellness services, and accessible residential living that supports independence and community. With spaces for recreation, learning, and care — and services like doctors’ offices onsite — the Hub will serve not just Elmwood residents, but the wider community. It’s a space where families, neighbours, and supporters can grow together.

Why the Elmwood Community Hub Matters.

The Elmwood Community Hub is a bold step toward inclusion and accessibility. It will be a purpose-built space for learning, creativity, wellness, and connection—designed with and for people with intellectual disabilities.

This fully accessible, multi-use space will bring together:

- Interconnected programming and community spaces that support safety and independence.

- Accesible health and wellness services
like doctors’ offices and other essentials.

- Equitable residential living that supports independence and community.

By uniting care, services, and inclusive design under one roof, the Elmwood Community Hub will reduce barriers, expand opportunities, and model what’s possible when we design with people — not just for them.

For individuals with disabilities: it’s a safe, inclusive space where they can grow, connect with others and celebrate their unique strengths and interests.

For families: it means peace of mind knowing loved ones are supported in a space where they truly belong.

For Saskatoon: it’s a vibrant community space offering public events, workshops and shared experiences that bring people with disabilities and the wider community together to foster inclusion and meaningful connection.

With many individuals still facing long waitlists and barriers to accessible programming, the Hub will fill a critical gap—creating space for joy, growth, and belonging in the heart of our community.

Hear from our community.

“Elmwood has helped me become independent, teaching me to set boundaries, manage my diabetes and cook. The SILP (Supportive Independent Living) program supports me, and my job on the Elmwood maintenance team has helped me build skills. I’m excited for new opportunities and a brighter future in the new building.”
Hayyls
Elmwood Supportive Independent Living (SILP) participant.
“As parents of a child living in an Elmwood community home, we’ve seen firsthand how critical spaces like these are for encouraging independence, inclusion and joy. The Hub will not only provide our child with opportunities to grow, thrive, and connect with others but will also serve as a shining example of support for the entire community. It’s more than just a building—it’s a place where barriers are removed, talents are celebrated, and lives are transformed.”
Lorne & Glenda Bell
Elmwood Building Belonging Campaign Co-Chairs.
“The Hub will create a deliberate and inclusive community where individuals with disabilities, friends, and family can gather and connect. This innovative space aims to provide a welcoming, purposeful, and nurturing environment suitable for individuals at all life stages, anchored by the principles of inclusivity and intergenerational community building.”
Bo Østerberg Kristensen
Chair, Elmwood Board of Directors.
“Times have changed for people with intellectual disabilities. The model used to be one size fits all, whereas Elmwood’s vision for the future prioritizes independence and choice.”
Linda Boyko
Project Specialist, Elmwood employee, 30 years of service.
"This vision has a vast amount of potential to create positive opportunities to gather and collaborate to create new options and possibilities for individuals with disabilities."
Heather Tetzlaff
Executive Director, Community Living Association Saskatoon Inc. (CLASI)
“I am a proud mom to my five-year-old son, Henry, who has Down Syndrome. Over the past year, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to get to know more about Elmwood and the people behind it. I can say with full confidence that what they’re building with the Hub is nothing short life life-changing.”
Brittany Caffet
